The French are very successful in the main sports they compete in. One thing that people ALWAYS overlook when evaluating a country's sporting success is THE COUNTRY'S POPULATION. France population: 65 million. Germany: 81 million. USA: 313 million. Considering these numbers, the US and Germany BETTER be better than France in the sports they share, and they usually are, which makes complete sense.

Anyway here goes:

Rugby: They have made it to the finals of the Rugby world cup many times, but they unfortunately have not won, though statistically they should have by now and probably will soon. In 2011, they barely lost to the All Blacks 8-7. They are also the best european rugby team. In terms of European rugby, even though England has more 6 Nations championships, that count includes times when France was not even in the competition. If you count only the times where France was present, France won many more than the other european nations.

Football/soccer: France is again one of the most successful nations in the world. Their era of dominance came at the turn of the century, where they won the world cup in 1998 (destroying Brazil 3-0) and then the Euro 2010. They are one of six nations to have won the world cup, and they have two Euro championships (second only to powerhosue Germany).

Handball: Not a mainstream sport, but France is currently the best team in the world.

Those are the three main French sports. Not many French people care about the rest, but I will evaluate their strength in those sports anyway.

Parkour: Invented in France by a Frenchman...

Swimming: They currently have the best sprinters in the world, and some very good mid-distance swimmers. In Beijing in 2008, they technically had the best relay team in the world but Jason Lezak is a superhuman and barely edged them out, smashing the individual split record in the process. Alain Bernard, Amaury Leveaux, Fabien Gilot, Frederick Bousquet, Yannick Agnel, Camille Lacourt...Plenty of fast Frenchman there...

Racing: Most formula two champions out of any country.

Basketball: They are meh. Runners up a few times in the Euro cup, but they aren't really a major force in international competition. The Americans always dominate every country anyway. I should mention however that a few French players have found success in the NBA...Tony Parker with the Spurs for example.

Cycling: More tour de France winners than any other country (then again, some of them were won when only a few countries competed at the beginning of the century)

Tennis: Decent. Only the twelfth most popular French sport in terms of registered players. Still manage to consistently have a few players ranked in the top 20 worldwide.

Ice Hockey: Ok I will admit that this is the one sport that they should be good at (considering the number of players that play it) but they are only decent. Ranked in the top 20. Should be better.
