The owners of the track have never given attendance figures for any race nor figures for how many seats are at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where the 500 is held. In 2003, the Indianapolis Star newspaper took six months inspecting seating at the track and 'counting' the number. They came up with 257,325 permanent seats which are sold out for each event. Adding the thousands that are in the infield for the race, the Star estimates the annual attendance at 300,000.
