Not only can a team do that, but it also can argue against another major league team's playing near its territory. There has been a recent dispute between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics over the A's desire to relocate to the San Jose area. The Giants hold territorial rights to San Jose, but the team cannot block a move by the Athletics all by itself. The matter ultimately will be decided by a vote of all team owners.
Lefty Jose on a team
Team San Jose was created in 2004.
From the Giants own history section of their web site, "On June 3, after a rousing extra-innings victory over Philadelphia, manager Jim Mutrie was so overcome with emotion that he supposedly blurted out a description of his team that immediately became the franchise's new nickname. He called them his Giants."There have also been rumors that they were called the Giants because many of the players were tall and because there were many skyscrapers in New York, but the above is the truest story.
