Generally, teams have a better win/loss record when playing at home than when playing on the road. So a home team, in the late innings and when behind, may devise strategy that will get them at least tied in a game because the odds are that they will win the game since they are playing at home. This strategy usually means being conservative with their base running or attempting a sacrifice to move runners up a base so a sacrifice fly can score the tying run. They won't take many chances because they want to, at the very least, tie the score and go into extra innings.
