According to David Hackett Fisher in hs book "Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America", Bittle-Battle was an old English game that was taken to New England by the puritan settlers. It was a game involving bat, ball and four bases. In New England it was initially called the town game, or the New England game, or the Massachusets game but eventually became known as Baseball. So, I suppose bitle-battle is an old name for rounders. Peter Chapman............Twyford, Berkshire, England.
