A check, or a body check, is when one player hits a player from the opposing team. This can be into the boards or an open ice hit. You cannot hit from behind, hit a player without the puck, lead with the elbow or forearm, leave your feet before contact, take more than a few steps with the intention of hitting the player, or check a player while participating in a non-checking league. Ideally, a check is made with the shoulder, avoids head contact, and is with the intention to separate the player from the puck.

Checking is a call that happens only when a player nails somebody into the boards.

If someone on the opposing team has the puck and you are behind them and you skate and catch up to them, that is a successful back check.
