The original word is misogynist, which, taken from Greek means "aversion to women" and has in modern time come to mean a "woman hater". Because there is no polite word for "man hater", people have taken to replacing the feminine "mis" and replacing it with the masculine "mas." So, a masogynist would be a person who has an aversion to men or in modern parlance a man hater.
