During the Olympic Games opening ceremonies, an artistic program is designed by the hosting country to display the history and culture of their home. In addition, the Parade of Nations takes place, in which the athletes march into the stadium to represent their country.

The Olympic Opening Ceremonies are a combination of tradition and modern elements. There are some events that are mandated by the Olympic charter, and cannot be changed, and there are some small elements that change based on the host country.

The traditional things that happen at every Olympic ceremony are:

  • The Parade of Nations - this is where every participating athlete marches into the stadium, country by country. Each country's group has a sign, and their flag. Greece enters first (since the Olympics originated in Greece), then the host country, then all other countries.
  • The president of the Olympic Committee makes a speech, and then the host country declares the start of the games.
  • The Olympic flag is carried into the stadium.
  • The Olympic torch is carried into the stadium, and the fire is lit in the cauldron.
  • There is a symbolic release of doves (this used to be live doves, but many of them were hurt in the process. Now this is dove figures projected, athletes wearing dove wings, fireworks, etc.)
