This is a very arguable question. Chess can always be considered a hobby, because it's an elected pastime that can be played often, and enjoyably.
Although, a lot of people would say chess is not a sport, it actually is considered as a sport by the International Olympic Committee. Some people would disagree with this, as sports are normally required to be physical and entertaining by definition.
Yes, chess can be a hobby. Chess is also a very competitive game which is played internationally.
I would say no. According to The Free Dictionary, the definition of sport is: "Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively." Chess is governed by a set of rules. Chess is competitive. But there is no physical activity involved in playing chess. Therefore, chess is not a sport. Same with darts and poker. There is no physical activity with these games, therefore, they are not sports. However, the IOC who governs the Olympics considers chess to be a sport.
I think officially it is a sport
Tennis isn't a sport, it is more of a hobby.
My Hobby is singing and playing chess
The most popular sport in armenia is split between football and boxing, although Chess is the most popular 'sport' there but it depends whether you count chess as a sport?
Chess boxing is an unusual sport because chess & boxing are totally different 'sports'. Chess is a 'sport' of the mind, and is very calm (except when you or your opponent, whichever loses, is a bad loser!). Boxing is a 'sport' of strength, and is deffinately NOT a calm 'sport'.
It now is a sport and it will be included 2016 Olympics. Personally, I don't think Chess should be a sport.
