I believe Evan Longoria is of Mexican descent. I heard he was going to accept an invite to play for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic.

The question is not what his Nationality is, but what is his Ethnicity. His Nationality is American. His Ethnic make-up may be Spanish or Italian decent. (See Below)

The Longoria Surname

The surname "Longoria" originated in the province of Asturias in northwestern Spain. Longoria is thus Spanish, but unlike other Spanish surnames, it has no known meaning in the Spanish language. It also does not have any known meaning in Italian, which in earlier times had much influence on the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula when it was part of the Roman Empire, or in German, which likewise had a similar influence in Northern Spain upon the invasion of the Visigoths. Longoria does not exhibit any of the Moorish influences common in so many Spanish surnames, such as those with the "ez" suffix (denoting "son of"; e.g., Rodriguez means "son of Rodrigo"), probably because the Asturias homelands where our Longoria ancestors resided remained part of that small region of modern Spain that was never conquered or dominated by the Moors

The Spanish word most resembling the word Longoria is longuera, which means a long, narrow strip of land Thus, it may be that the name Longoria is derived from longuera and was originally used to designate an individual or family living on or near a long, narrow strip of land. Interestingly, the village of Longoria, in the province of Asturias, Spain, is located at the confluence of two rivers, the Rio Narcea and the Rio Pigueña. Perhaps, a longuera created by the two rivers at that site was the origin for the surname that through the passage of time became transformed into longoria.

A more likely possibility is that longoria was an Asturian word, perhaps even having the same meaning as the Spanish word longuera. In the 15th and 16th centuries, before the different Kingdoms of Spain had been united into one, each Kingdom had its own dialect. Each of the different dialects was derived from the Italian spoken by the Roman Empire, and had many similarities with each other, to the point even of having many common words. Nevertheless, these dialects were distinct and exist even to this day in Spain. These Ibero-Romance dialects include Castellano (Castile), Catala (Catalonia), Gascon (Gasconia), Portugues (Portugal), Galego (Galicia), Aragones (Aragon), and Asturianu (Asturias). As Castile became the dominant kingdom, its dialect became the dominant language for the united country. That dialect, Castellano, or Castillian Spanish as we call it, became the common language for Spain. Today, when we refer to the Spanish language we are actually referring to Castillian Spanish, its most common form. Since the Longorias were living in Asturias in the sixteenth century, and probably much earlier, it stands to reason that they spoke Asturianu, the Asturian dialect. The word longoria quite likely has some meaning in Asturianu, but I have yet to fully research that possibility. My speculation, for now, is that the Castillian longuera was a variation of an Asturianu word longoria, but this is simply a guess.

The earliest I have been able to trace back our direct Longoria ancestry is to Pedro de Longoria, father of Alonzo de la Pontiga and the grandfather of Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria. The word pontiga serves as a good example for my belief that longoria may have some meaning in the Asturianudialect. The word pontiga has no meaning in Castillian Spanish; however, I was able to find it in a condensed version of an Asturianu dictionary. Pontiga is an Asturianu word that translates into "entrada de horreo", or granary entrance, in Castillian Spanish. This example forms the basis for my belief that longoria may have some meaning in Asturianu.

A lady from Rome, Italy also emailed me with another possible meaning for the word Longoria. She pointed out that the Iberian Peninsula was once part of the Roman Empire and retains many words rooted in the Roman language. She suggested that Longoria could be derived from the two Italian words longo (meaning long) and ria (meaning river); hence, Longoria could mean "long river". This is an interesting possibility considering that the ancestral Longoria homes were located along the Rio Narcea.

WHAT? No wonder you Americans have such a controversial reputation here in Europe about your average cultural level... Where did you find this stupid idea regarding de "morish origines of the sufix -ez? What are you talking about? This suffix, wich means "son of", like de -s in Adams, like de preffix fitz-, like the -sen in danish, like de -is in catalan or like the -es in portuguese (well, in both portuguese and catalan it comes from the original castilian -ez), and there is any relation with the "morish". The origine is not well known, but the hipotesis speculate about a pre-roman existence or even a basque influence (-ez is an adverbial and possessive suffix in that pre-roman and today existing language beetwen France and Spain, in Basqueland). For exemple Garcia Iniguez was a king of the basque Kingdom of Pamplona (later Navarre) in the IX century. Nor Navarre neither the Castilian originaly county was under control of the "morish", and the romance languages were born in the area out of the cultural "morish" influence, not only the asturian, wich never became a fixed language.

Talking about Eva Longoria, stupid Americans, her "ethnic" make-up is pure American, not "spanish" or "Italian", as you say. The spanish and the Italian originaly spanish or Italian, specially if they are from the north, like Asturias, are not Aztec people or mix Aztec o tain people like Eva Longoria is obviously or the Americans who are called "latinos" in your stupid States.

How can you be so stupid, Americans?

You can't determine a Latino person's complete heritage by simply looking at their surname. the overwhelming majority of people in spanish speaking countries have a European surname but that doesnt mean that they're all of European descent. That's like concluding that Shaquile O'Neil is actually Irish because of his last name.

Both of his parents are from the US. His father's family is from Mexico while his mothers family is European. And you are correct, because of his Mexican ancestry, he was eligible to play for Mexico at the world baseball classic but declined the offer. see source: http://www.draysbay.com/2008/12/24/701546/Mexico-extends-wbc-invite
