There have been three times the modern Olympic games were called off. All three times were due to a war being in progress.

The games in 1916 (Berlin) were canceled because of World War I and because the host country (Germany) was an active belligerent.

The games in 1940 and 1944 were canceled because of World War II, for similar reasons. Tokyo had originally been chosen to host the 1940 games, but the games were moved to Helsinki (before being finally called off) because Japan became a belligerent. The 1944 games were to be held in London, but again it was actively in war.

The Summer Olympics have been held every Leap Year from 1900 up to 2012, except there were no Games held during the 2 World Wars, that was in 1916,1940 & 1944. 3 times altogether.
