one word: MONEY
athletes today are making more money than ever before, and much of that is do to increased ticket sales, and the successes of player unions. In the NFL, top draft picks are commonly the highest paid players on their team. In the NBA, large endorsement deals are causing superstars to devote as much attention off the field than on it. An in the MLB, players will turn their back on franchises that have centered their organizations around them, just to make a little extra money. The loyalty in the game is practically gone. All great players are destined to end up on the Mets, Cubs, Phillies, Red Sox, Yankees, or Angels eventually.
