Find a likely spot for a piton, select one appropriate for that application, and drive it in. There are several considerations for selecting a spot to set a piton, and there are some guidelines that point toward the use of a particular "pin" in that spot. You'll look for a place, usually a crack, and find an appropriately sized and shaped piton, and you'll set it with a hammer. Note that the sound the piton makes when it is struck and set will tell the experienced climber just about everything there is to know about how well the piton will hold.

A piton is a metal spike used in climbing. With a hammer, climbers drive it into a crack or seam in a rock and use it as an anchor to aid in climbing or to protect from a fall.
