You do not need to be popular. But if you must then try these ideas:

1. Try to act nice to everyone in the popular group

2. Wear clothes that they would love and they will start noticing you

3. Act like them even when they are not looking because you never know when they are going to turn around and see you. They don't exactly think you are "cool" if you are crawling around the floor meowing like a cat. (Just an example) unless you actually do that because I am not saying there is anything wrong with that.

4. Believe in yourself. The popular people are only popular because they tell themselves that they are!! Believe in yourself!!

The key to being popular i believe is to really get to know everyone around you, even if they are different and do not limit yourself to one click or group. Be involved in many different activities, clubs, and sports. Also have a easy going laid back personality that will draw people to you and not throw them off. Also keep in touch with everyone.
