He simply changed it.

It is not uncommon for performers to adopt a stage persona.

Different songs can be performed in the first second or third person such as

"Jumping Jack Flash" or "Stranger In A Strange Land".

The character in the song could be real or imaginary or any mixture of both.

The Beatles even did it when they as a group adopted the Sgt. Pepper alter ego!

Also let's take note that Leon did it again with his famous country western alter ego Hank Wilson who made another appearance in "Hank Wilson's Back".

It's a time honored tradition in the show biz.

Sometimes you want to say something or express something that is outside yourself and your own experience. Artist's do not decide what a song needs, they listen to it as they make it and give it what it want's.

If the end result is a song coming from someplace else about somebody else then you kind of HAVE to be 'somebody else' to sing it and do the composition justice.

Short answer...

I do not have a clue how his name became Leon Russell from Russell Bridges.

It's amazing that after almost 70 years have past, you are the only person to ask this interesting question.

Good Question!

I wish I had a good answer!

I'm guessing that the Leon came from a much loved and respected family member.

Like a Grandfather or something.

I'll tell you what though, Leon "IS" Leon.
