Currently 22, I remember thinking, at the age of 15, that kids throwing in the upper 60s was the fastest we were seeing. I'd venture to say that about 62-63 is average. I'd basically agree but would say the averages reach as high as 65. My fifteen year old throws about 73 - 78 mph and that's generally upper end for that age group ... though you do find an occasional freak of nature at that age who will throw over 80 mph. The reason I've found for so many kids throwing low end at the younger age is the fact that so few are ever taught how to correctly push off the rubber. That makes a considerable difference in pitch velocity. Another important point on this topic is on the subject of radar guns. If you're using a Jugs you have to know that they are only rated for accuracy to within 3 - 6 mph ... if you want a more accurate reading use a Pro-Stalker ... they're rated for accuracy to within 1/10 of 1 mph (i.e. it is highly possible that a kid you think is throwing 83 mph based on Jugs gun readings is actually throwing 77). You also need to have the gun stationary on a tripod or table vs. holding it or the accuracy can be thrown off even more.
