Skateboards are made out of 7 sheets of wood, usually Canadian Rock maple. They are glued together with veneer. New designs have been putting carbon-fiber layers into their boards, specially designed layers with air pockets(Element Helium), and other parts to increase strength and decrease weight.

Usually they are made up of 7 very thin shaped pieces of wood called ply's. The pieces are layed ontop of each other forming a criss cross pattern with the directions of the grains of the woods and then glued together very tightly

They are made in factories, but it depends on what company. Skateboards can be made anywhere in the U.S.A. even though people say Hawaii is the one that makes the most. One website of a Skateboarding factory can be found on the related link.

California, they were made by surf boarders for 'street Surfing'. I'm not sure where in ca they first made them. if you don't wanna do a lot of researching a semi-fictional movie Lords of Dogtown will fill you in about skateboarding and its origins.

7-Ply skateboard are the most common.

The ply is usually made of maple.
