They have to do with how the sole is placed onto the shoe. A Vulc shoe is a hot process where they melt or hot glue the outsole onto the shoe, then glue the (usually white) band onto the outside. A cup-sole is a cold prodded where they mold the whole outsole, band an all, and usually stitch the sole onto the shoe. Vulc has a better board feel because it's a thinner outsole. Cupsole provides more protection because it's a thicker mold. :)
