The first couple of times bearings get wet the grease/oil inside them will protect the mechanism, but by repeatedly flushing them they will rust and deteriorate. If they have rubber shields, one remedial action is to pop them open and add rinse them in something like acetone before (most importantly) adding bearing oil and putting the shieds back on.
