Well, it should have at least two layers of wood, preferably seven though. I suggest you buy a bakers skateboard, all of theirs are very good quality!

Surfing and longboarding are very similar because you turn
and can ride like your surfing. Longboarding is like surfing on
land and is a little bit easier, if your a beginning surfer and you
longboard then you already have a head start on surfing.
Longboards are not meant for tricking, just for cruising around. You want bigger, harder wheels and I prefer having the trucks pretty tight. ,,, i think longboards are good for a lot of things such as; racing, but the racing standerds are listed above. But if you want to carve or slide then a shorter board will help, loose trucks, and pretty much any hardness of the wheels. And also if you're looking into buting one that's top-of-the-line than you should look at loadeds and/or landyatchz.
If you're not interested in fancy stuff like sliding or free-riding, then a good longboard for beginners is the pintail. Pintails are wide, and give added foot room at the back and front of the deck. Any board can be good for beginners, but I'd personally recommend a pintail. It all depends on how you'd like to ride. Get out there and skate until you see what suits your style.
Kracked Skulls offer great longboards. Check them out and even use the discount code DECA at checkout to get 5% off!
