Take it from a water skier with experience. If you have never done it before, it can be very difficult to start. You always start with doubles because singles is a lot more difficult. In general you need good endurance, strength and balance. Anyone skiing for the first time will most likely not "get up" the first go. It usually takes at least 3 turns to get up, and then it could take a few more tries after that to "stay" up for the entire turn. At the end of the turn you simply let go of the rope and glide on the water towards the beach. It is very normal to feel aches and pains after water skiing, but don't let that discourage you, because that simply means your getting stronger and fitter and you will find it easier to get up the next time you try! Once you are comfortable getting up and staying up on doubles, you can experiment by going over the wake to practice "cutting". Once you feel confident on double skis, then you can move to singles. Singles requires a lot more balance and probably a lot more strength. I practiced so much that water skiing is now my favourite sport and I enjoy it.

A few key points to remember:

-When you are on doubles, keep the tips of the skis out of the water, not too much, and not to little. Keep the rope in between the skis. Bend your knees (but not to much) and keep your arms strong and straight.

-When on singles, it usually helps to have a single ski rope so that the rope is not to "one" side of the ski -- this would make it more difficult to balance -- and remember to put a lot of weight on your back foot UNTIL you feel the boat "pull" you up then you put more weight on the front foot.

-There are two ways to start -- in water or a hop start -- I recommend in water starts especially for beginners.
