Though you indeed can skateboard in any shoe that will tie tight and stay on your foot, if you plan on doing any serious skating, you might want to consider spending the extra few dollars and picking up a pair of shoes made for Skateboarding. Companies like Vans, DC, Emerica, and C1rca make excellent skateboarding shoes.
The difference between a regular shoe and a skateboarding shoe is in the construction. A skateboarding shoe is naturally more padded generally more comfortable, the sides of the shoe are built by stronger materials like leather or suede to withstand grip tape abuse, and the soles are made flat and grippy to stay on the board.
Just as you wouldn't go Bowling in the wrong shoes, and you wouldn't wear high-heels for running, you shouldn't wear normal trainers to skate. Wear proper skate shoes. They are designed to survive the wear and tear you get from skating; like when you do ollies in non-skate shoes, you will destroy the toe in a matter of minutes. Definately buy some good skate shoes.
You can skateboard with Era Tie-Dye shoes. These shoes are safe for skateboarding as well as other outdoor activities.

Vans do not give like a magical ability to skateboard, however, they do enable you to keep better balanced and comfort while skateboarding. The inside of the vans, like most skateboarding shoes, have a soft inside that does not rub the skin. The bottom of vans and other skateboarding shoes are flat which also helps the balance of the skater.
Skateboarding shoes have a different traction that makes the shoes stick to the sand paper surface of a skateboard.
