Zola Budd broke the world record for the 5000 metres on two occasions. The first time, in 1984 when she was 18, was not recognized because the race was in the country of South Africa, her home country, and the race was not recognized due to political reasons. She applied for and was granted British citizenship later in 1984. She broke the record again in August of 1985 and this time the record was recognized. She was 19 years old.
