A plie is a bending of the knees in Ballet, or most any other style of dance. They can be petit(just a slight bend) or grande(large bend where you are nearly touching the floor), and in every foot position(1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th). A plie is done before and after every jump/leap in order to reduce the shock that goes down your legs and can cause injuries. A plie is the most basic skill in dancing.

In ballet, a "plie releve" is a movement that involves bending the legs/leg and then rising onto pointe or demi-pointe, thereby straightening the legs/leg. Though this is really two distinct movements, the plie is often used before a releve so that the bending creates enough force to rise all the way onto pointe.

Plie is important because it protects our knees when we are landing from jumps, changing directions, and executing complicated dance moves. Plie means to bend the knee. We have more ability for movement when our knees are bent. We can jump higher if we have more plie because it gives us more bounce. The bending of the knee absorbs the shock our body feels when landing from a jump, or running, or any physical activity where we leave the ground. As dance teachers say, "Plie is your friend."

It means "bend", from the verb plier, to bend. A smooth and continuous bending of the knees.
