At the beginning of his career, Joffrey choreographed works for his company while he was also dancing in the company. He began a close and life-long relationship with Gerald Arpino. Their mothers had met in Italy prior to emigrating to America. While their initial relationship was romantic, they continued to live together and collaborate in productions for Joffrey's small company. Over time Arpino began to experiment with choreographing while Joffrey created his own works and used works by other choreographers such as Balanchine, Tudor and Bournonville, Moncion and Ailey. Arpino was drafted to produce works (and chip in on the rental of a performance space) with friends. His works, Partita for 4 and Ropes were well received. Later that year he was commissioned to produce a new work which he completed under the patronage of Rebekah Harkness (Sea Shadow). As Arpino continued to receive recognition for his choreographic talent, he became the in-house choreographer for the company. It was stated that Joffrey's use of Arpino also had to do with the fact that his was loyal to Joffrey and the company, worked quickly and was not expensive. The Joffrey began to play a role in the preservation of earlier works no longer in the repertoire. This effort culminated in a restoration of Nijinski's Rite of Spring with Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer. Joffrey was also known for elevating a number of new choreographers who have become well known in the US including Kylian, Kudelka and Forsythe.
