The purpose of Ballet is to showcase the art of dance, while remaining light, graceful, strong and being technically advanced. The more modern purposes of ballet are to exercise and ballet is very enjoyable so many people do it for fun. Many people think that ballet is simply dancing around in silly tutus and swaying your arms, but it is actually a beautiful display of strength and agility, as well as grace.

There is no real purpose. It's a leisurely thing to do or simply a hobby. It could be used for a bit of romance in a relationship or it could be an aspiration. The purpose is unique to every dancer.

Originally 'Ballroom dancing' was the way a person would attempt to 'woo', attract another person, much like today when a person goes to a dance. The main difference was the rules on public affection, back then if a man wanted to 'touch' a woman it would be done in dance, helping then step down from a carriage, walk stairs or be escorted arm in arm. Ballroom dancing, because of its romantic beginning still is considered a very romantic form of dancing.

Many historians believe ballet was created for the Kings of France for their entertainment. This is perhaps true, but I think it was an extension of sections of plays ( at the time commedia del arte) that was then refined and catergorised. This was done by the French, Italians and the Russians.

Ballet used to be performed in operas, as kind of a moving background. People who could not hear as well would watch the dancers, because they would dance the mood of the Opera. Soon after ballet was performed in operas, they would perform by themselves without the opera singers. They would perform different plays with what is called "dancers language" dancers language is made up of many different movements symbolizing words, and different meanings. Ballet brought the mood and "feeling" to their audiences.
