In Ballet it is actually means 'To Pointe' it can either be to the back front or side in a combination. Tendu actually means "stretched". It makes sense if you understand the group it belongs to. The tendu is part of a family of movements called "battements", or beatings, where you "beat" the working leg against the supporting leg. In Battement tendu( to the front for example) you push the heel forward until the foot slides as far away from you as possible without letting the toe ever leaving the floor. It stretches the leg and this makes the foot fully pointed (saying "to point" can be misleading because people will pick up their foot and point/poke the toe down which is the wrong action). Other battements are: degage which "disengages" from the floor. and a Grand battement is a large beating of the leg. There are more to this group, but the key is that these three all leave the floor through a pointed foot as you move your working foot down and away from you.
