From what I know, Russia came out with ballet which began popular.Later on, I believe it was lyrical (unsusure)Tap comes next, followed by jazz. Then, old-style hip hop into today's hip hop. That's not all-acro, a.k.a acrobatics, is also a dance type. I have no idea where it comes into the timeline, but I'm pretty sure after jazz.

Absolutely, positively Ballet. It is the core of all forms of dance.
Ballet is the foundation for all kinds of dance and it helps with technique and the ability to hold your body.
There are many different kinds of dances all around the world, originating from all places. Some more popular dance styles are ballet, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, Celtic, Irish, African, Chinese fan dancing, ballroom (including salsa, rumba, cha cha etc...) tap, modern, fusion, musical theatre and belly dancing. Over the years styles of dances have changed and created more techniques. Celtic dancing, is more a modern twist of Irish dancing, without the vibrant costumes, and less tradiotional steps and dances.
All i can think of is pointwork in ballet
DEFINITELY not!!!!!!!!! I do ballet and we are very current. They are always making improvements and things of the sort. Shoes are evolving into more supportive, and sleeker looking shoes. Leotard styles are changing, we now have hairnets for our buns, music is becoming clearer, lights are fancier, floors are cushioned, not at all is it unmodern! also, there is contemporary ballet, which is a mix of modern dance with ballet. Ballet also builds the skills required for more popular types of dance today, such as hip hop, jazz, lyrical, tap, modern, contemporary, swing dancing, ANY type of dances goes back to ballet. Ballet is actually a required class for most people who do any type of dance competitively. Ballet is in it's PRIME TIME right now. :)
it can take lots of years as you have to do levels of each the type of dance to be very dedicated I have been dancing since I was 3 (10 years). I take 6 classes (ballet, pointe, modern, hip hop, tap, jazz), assist 2 (Ballet 2 and Tap 1), and me and my friend teach 1 (Pre-Ballet). Right now, I'm in Ballet 4, and the other girls in my class are all 2-3 years older than me. It's truly not about how long, its more about the technique you have and the effort that you put in. The girls in my pointe class are mostly in grades 10 and 11, and I'll be in 8th next year.
