Normally, you get a new pair when your old ones are dead (the shank broke/ the box is not hard anymore) or you get some new ones when you grow out of them (obviously. but hopefully your pointe shoe will be dead by the time your foot grows a whole size larger...)
you can tell when a pointe shoe is dead is when the tip starts to rip, and the bottom starts to turn really black!!
For different people, shoes die in different ways. I know when my shoes are dead when the shank (kind of like the sole) is too flexible and is over bending and/or the box (the tip of the shoe) is very mushy. Sometimes, the box dies first and that mushiness causes over bending in the shank and sometimes the shank goes first which makes the box mushy. It depends really.
Pointe shoes have a different lifespan for each dancer. It all depends on how often you wear them, how good of an arch you have, and what you're doing in them, etc. I've had mine for a year and just now need new ones, but my dance teacher gets new ones every month or so. Like I said, it all depends. One way to tell is just by bending them (not on your feet). With one hand on the box and the other on the heel, bend them together. If they bend too easily they're worn out. Also if they bend easily when on pointe, or you find it harder to releve, they're too soft. Also, ask your dance teacher. They know best and can tell you if you need new pointe shoes! Another good way to tell is by going up to releve and looking at the knuckle of your big toe. If it is bending (called knuckling) this means your shoes are dead and you need new ones.
it is lined with dead bodies
No matter how little or much you use your shoes they will break down because of how much your feet sweat.

Elie kept his shoes from being taken by the Kapos by pretending to be dead when they were collecting the shoes of those who died. This way, he was able to keep his shoes and avoid being left without them.

No, lice do not live in shoes! They travel from person to person. Lice can not live within 2 hours of having a host, so if lice ever lived in your shoes then they are dead. you b**ch.
It usually means they are kept in the box and are never worn/used. You usually here this when selling shoes (eBay) or when a person will break out (wear) their "deadstock" shoes.
