The closest anybody seems to have come (to reaching a fair degree of competency) is by using DVDs, practicing, watching videos of yourself and then correcting your errors. However, in order to make real and meaningful progress, feedback is essential from an experienced instructor.

No, you really cannot! It is dangerous and you need lots of ballet experience, and an experienced and talented ballet teacher to teach you. Please do not attempt to teach yourself, even if you have gathered lots of information!

I do not think you can. There are so many things you can learn. All the words used in ballet are french so you would need to learn those words. You need to be able to point out the details used in ballet. For example, in jazz, when you do a pirohuette turn, your leg by your knee is parallel and in ballet it is turned out. In ballet you all ways use opposites too. Also, you need to learn all the positions. When you do a performance, you don't always smile too. So you probally could not teach yourself ballet.

It is possible to teach yourself how to do pointe, but the real reason ballet teachers don't put you on pointe when you want is because it is extremely dangerous to your body especially your ankles. I know several people you went on pointe when they weren't ready and now they can hardy walk let alone dance.To tell if your ankles are strong enough to start pointe work is by an x-rayIf the doctor says it is safe to start on pointe you can teach yourself by videos.GOOD LUCK!!!
