A grand jete is a dance step, most commonly used in Ballet. There are many ways to approach the step, but the most common is either to start with a chasse (step out with one foot, then "chase" that foot with the other, pushing the first out again) step out with the front foot, then cross over with the other, and use that one to PUSH off the ground. Make sure your legs are straight, and chances are, you won't get into splits while you are up there the first time, although that is the main goal. Also remember, up, not out Don't try to go far out, try to get high in the air, in an attempt to hit the ceiling :)

The other way to approach this is far more "balletish" with more ballet steps involved. This goes like this; tombe, pas de bourree, glissade, grand jete. If you are educated in ballet, you may know these steps, but or else, you can look at the related link.

While in classical ballet, a grand jete is a leap through the air with one leg in front of you and the other behind. When doing a grand jete, you have two choices.
