The .308 has a shorter cartridge case, and a fatter bullet. The .270 is based on the 30-06 case, about a quarter inch longer than the .308 case.

The .50 caliber is larger in diameter than the .308. If you are referring to the bullets for the .50 BMG and the .308 Winchester, the .50 is MUCH heavier, and much longer than the .308.

The .308 Winchester and the 7.62 NATO cartridges are similar in size, but slightly different in chambering, thickness of the cartridge case, and pressures in loading. The 7.62 NATO cartridge may be safely fired in a .308 Winchester firearm. The reverse is not always true.
The 30-30 is a rimmed cartridge, versus the .308, which has a rimless cartridge. The 30-30 has much lower energy than the .308, and is typically loaded with a flat tipped bullet, due to the number of lever action 30-30s that had a tubular magazine. The .308 typically has a spitzer (pointed) bullet.
The cartridge in question is the .300 Winchester Magnum, and not the .308 WinMag. The .308 cartridge is about 16mm shorter than the .300 Winchester Magnum casing. The two are NOTinterchangeable.
Long action will handle longer cartridges, such as 30-06. Short action handles shorter cartridges, such as .308.
