Generally, the three events in a modern day triathlon are: Swimming, Biking and Running.
In most triathlons participants will finish the swimming portion and quickly transition to biking apparel, whereby they start the bike leg of the race. Immediately after the bike leg, participants transition from bike to run and start the running leg of the race. The race is over when the run is finished.
The winner of a triathlon competition is the person with the lowest overall time (which is the total of swim time + transition 1 + bike time + transition 2 + run time).
A triathlon is a multiple-stage competition involving the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance disciplines. While many variations of the sport exist, triathlon, in its most popular form, involves swimming, cycling, and running in immediate succession over various distances. Triathletes compete for fastest overall course completion time, including timed "transitions" between the individual swim, cycle, and run components.
Triathlon races vary in distance. According to the International Triathlon Union, and USA Triathlon, the main international race distances are:
The most recognized branded Ultra Distance is the Ironman triathlon.
A Triathlon includes swimming, cycling and running, with a timed transition in between each. There are multiple distances for triathlon. Sprint distance being the shortest is probably the most popular. This is a 750m swim, followed by a 20k cycle and finishing with a 5k run. The longest is the IronMan triathlon. this is a 3.8k swim, 180k bike ride and finishing with a marathon. Check this link for more details on the set distances for each race type.
The three sporting events that are required to complete a conventional triathlon are swimming, bicycling, and running, and they are usually performed in that order. There is some variation in triathlon distances from race to race, but the races are standardized for international and Olympic competition. The Ironman Triathlon is the most commercially recognized organization involved in sponsoring races.
