Helmets are generally not worn in soccer, as a matter of practicality and tradition. However, players may wear helmets for the purpose of safety, so long as they are not dangerous to the player or anyone else in the opinion of the referee, and are deemed medically necessary. The league, association, or competition may impose any limitations on the size, material, color, or any other aspect of any helmet worn, but may not require them under the Laws.

There are only two circumstances under which a helmet would be necessary in soccer.

  1. The player has some medical condition or physical sensitivity that mandates wearing of a helmet. In this case, the player should really consider whether soccer is the best activity in which to be involved.
  2. The opponent, league, or competition has a reputation for causing an unusual number of head injuries or contacts. In this case, referees and league or competition officials are not doing their part to ensure player safety, one of the three pillars of the spirit of the game (along with fairness and enjoyment).

In soccer, helmets are generally considered impractical for several reasons. First, they cause undue focus of attention, because of their unusual presence in the game. Second, they cover the head, which is the way the human body expels much of its heat, meaning that wearing a helmet may increase the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and acute dehydration. Additionally, the helmet adds extra weight to the player, which may cause them to run or player slower. Finally, helmets invariably interfere with the way the ball rebounds from the head when played, and may even represent an unfair advantage for the wearer.
