shooting has been an Olympic sport since 1896. except 1904 & 1928 first remember that shooting is a sport practiced all over the world, and it has been for centuries. the shooting events this year are diverse. there will be air rifle events as well as conventional firearms. bare in mind however, all or most of the firearms are in the .22 LR or 12 GA. 8-7 1/2 shoot shells. the targets will be bulls-eyes and clay targets. the shooting sport is just that a sport they will not be shooting at man shaped targets. the Olympics was originally a contest of military skills. (even in ancient Greece) unlike ancient Greece or war, the contestants in the modern games walk away. look at the Track and Field events: the lance (projectile) the pole vault (jumping over walls or defensive obstacles) the discus (projectile) the 100-1500m dash (charge! or retreat!) the marathon (battlefield mesager) there is also the other events with military implications: equestian, rowing, canoeing, judo, Taekwondo, wrestling, archery, fencing, boxing but there are modern sports as well. the purpose of the games is to bring the world together on a field for peaceful competition. In no other place or time for the next four years will the USA will be able to compete with North Korea in many of the events. I know that firearms are frowned upon in many countries but i much prefer a peaceful contest of arms to testing there skills on the field of war.
