Why are there no winter olympic games in 2012?

A few years ago, it was decided that the winter olypics and the summer Olympics should not be held in the same year. The next winter olympics will be in 2014, then 2018, then 2022. The summer olympics are scheduled for 2012, 2016, 2020 then 2024.
