The torch is lit in Athens (the home of the original Olympics) and is paraded in various major cities around the world, carried by a select group of well known athletes and celebrities from that country, and finally ends up arriving at the opening ceremony of the Olypmpics. It stays lit till the closing ceremony, where the torch is passed on the representive of the country which will host the next games in four years.
