In 1964 Sherman Poppen built a surfboard for the snow. It was basically two kids' skis bolted together.

In 1965, he created the "snurfer" a mix of snow and surfer which was sold in toy stores and sold over a million units

In 1970, Dimitrije Milovich, a surfer, experimented with laminating glass and gravel on a board and used nylon straps. His company "Winterstick" is probably the first snowboard company.

In 1977, Jake Burton who was an avid snurfer decided to found his own company in Vermont. Starting with a small collection of "snowboards" which were flexible wooden planks with water ski bindings.
