In the Olympic logo they represent the only five colours used in world flags.
The Olympic flag has a white background, with five interlaced rings in the centre: blue, yellow, black, green and red. This design is symbolic; it represents the five continents of the world, united by Olympism, while the six colors are those that appear on all the national flags of the world at the present time.

The red/white and white/red flags were used identically for visual signaling. Depending on the background (i.e. skyline or vegetation), one color combination might be more difficult to see. Therefore the flags were used interchangeably, selecting whichever would provide the best visibility to the observer.
Before the yellow and red flags were introduced the flags used to be white and blue. Scuba diving flags are also blue and white. Red and white is a shark flag. I have been on patrol for over 10 years, we have never used a blue and white flag.

Its something to do with navy ships returning to home ports. (16/17/18 centuries) The ships would fly whatever flags as they entered the harbours. Anyone out there with a naval background elaborate?
The white background of the Japan flag is representative of honesty and purity.
Red, White & Blue
UK means United Kingdom (aka Great Britain). UK consists of 4 nations, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. UK flag, known as the Union Jack, consists of 3 national flags overlaid. England's flag, red cross (vertical/horizontal) on a white background. Scotland's flag, white diagonal cross on blue background and N. Ireland's flag, red diagonal cross on white background. The three national flags are named for the patron saints of each nation. England - St. George Scotland - St. Andrew N. Ireland - St. Patrick Patron saint of Wales is St. David but the welsh flag isn't represented in the Union Jack.
