When did Jamaica join the Olympics and in what sports?
Jamaica first competed in the Olympics at the 1948 Summer Games
in London. They sent 13 athletes to compete in athletics,
weightlifting, and boxing. Two Jamaican athletes won medals at the
1948 Games:
1) Arthur Wint - gold in men's 400 meter dash and silver in
men's 800 meter run. Wint is the first Jamaican athlete to win an
Olympic gold medal.
2) Herb McKenley - silver in men's 400 meter dash.
