Hi everybody! I have not yet found the number of participants by country. However, but it is a lengthy process, it can be obtained for most of the largest countries, by Googling it, country by country. The purpose of this exercise was to try to find how the Europeans as a whoel really fared versus China and the US. One cannot do that just by adding the number of medals. A better approach, although imperfect, is to make a ration of the total number of participating athletes and the total number of medals. I have tried this exercise just for the 5 largest European countries, Germany, France, the UK, Italy and Spain. The result is 174 total medals for 1728 participants, or 10% getting medals. It is wrong anyway, as there are multiple medal holdng athletes. Yes its innacurate as Britain had 16% getting medals...impressive when you also consider they sent swimmers largely just to gain experience for their fledgling swimming programme as they hadnt previously put any effort into this sport. This compares with: 1st.China, 637 participants and 100 medals or 15.7 % getting medals, 2nd.US, 596 participants and 110 medals, or 18.5 % getting medals, 3rd.Russia, 472 participants and 72 medals, or 15.2 getting medals. Of course this will have to be further refined, but it leads to many conclusions, whatever... A better % would be to look at Gold success...China in finishing 1st in the table got 51...which would put their % way out infront.
