Not only was there peace but there was also tremendous growth. The Roman Empire greatly expanded. It spread in such places as Western Asia, Northern Africa and parts of Europe. Growth also happened within the empire. Many public works such as monuments, roads and bridges were created during this time. In addition great buildings were built. One such building was the Coliseum. At the Coliseum, circuses were held. These were not quite the circuses that happen in modern days. These circuses held chariot races and gladiator fights. Gladiators were specially trained slaves who fought each other or even animals in bloody battles. Many of these battles often ended in the death of the gladiator.
Usually, they put slaves, the poor, or conquered enemies into the circuses for entertainment. They faced gladiators or animals in the circuses. It was usually a way to kill someone for entertainment. If the slaves, the poor, or conquered enemies won, they were just put in the circus again. The circuses were race tracks, not gladiatorial arenas. People went to the circuses to watch horse races and chariot races.

The gladiatorial combats were held in the Colosseum once it was opened. Before that they could be held in any amphitheater and before that, the original small combats were held in the Forum Borarium, or the cattle market. There is evidence of arenas being built outside of military forts and also in many Roman towns.
The Olympic Games were Greek, held in the territory of Elis in the Peloponnesian Peninsula.
The gladiatorial games were held at the amphitheatres which were arenas for these games. Pompeii had its amphitheatre like many other Roman towns.
Contest in ancient Rome were held in the places that suited them. The chariot races were held in the Circus, the gladiatorial contests were held in an arena and the poetry contests were held in a theater.

The funeral games are held at the end of the Iliad in accordance with Greco-Roman tradition. In antiquity, when a hero died, funeral games were held to celebrate his honour. For an excellent discussion of the ritualistic nature of the funeral games in the Iliad, refer to the following article from the Classics Association of the Midwest and South: www.camws.org/meeting/2009/program/abstracts/06F2.Griffin.pdf
