Like any sport you can just 'start' it. However in order to compete in a bodybuilding competition it will take quite a long time. This comes down to the individual, their diet and training.

From experience, if you have a set diet and training regime then it will take two years to become a bodybuilder and be able to compete. In this time the individual would need to gain sufficient muscle mass that is equally distributed throughout the body, target neglected areas and gain strength throughout the bulking phase. This would take approximtely 18 to 21 months in the 2 year span.

The remaining time would be spent preparing for competition or shredding. In this phase the individual will change their diet and training patterns in order to remove as much subcutanous body fat to show as much muscle definition as possible.
