Players on Ice During HockeyThere are (theoretically) 12 players on the ice during a hockey game. Each side will have usually have a goalkeeper, a center, 2 defensemen and 2 wings.

However, in practise one team will sometimes have only five players, as a result of penalties. They might also have an extra ice-player instead of a goalkeeper, but this does not affect the number of players on the ice.
There are six players for each team on the ice at one time during a hockey game. This includes:

  • 1 center
  • 3 wingmen
  • 2 defensemen
  • 1 goaltender

Many times there is said to be five men on the ice for each team )the goaltender is not counted).

Players on Ice

There are 12, ( 2 goalies, 4 defensemen, & 6 forwards) However, this number can be reduced at any time during a game depending on how many players receive penalties and are sent to the penalty box.

The fewest number of players on the ice at any one time is 4 a side or 8 total.

Coaches have to be careful not to encourage whole scale brawls that may result

in being unable to make full shift changes due to too many players being hit with majors or match penalties.

Each team roster in the NHL is limited to 23 players, 20 of whom may "dress" to play in a game (18 players and 2 goalies). The number of players on the ice for each team is nominally 6, five and the goalie, but this may be reduced by penalty. Teams cannot have fewer than 4 players including the goalie.

There are 5 people who "skate out" as it is called. They are the ones other than the goalies. There is one goalie on the ice per team. So the answer to your question is that unless there is a penalty there are 6 skaters on the ice per team.

There are 6 players on the ice for each team playing hockey if there are no penalties. A center, 2 wingmen, two defensemen and a goalie. So that means there are 12 players on the ice at the same time. There are also 3 referees Two linesmen and a referee. Now in the NHL and other high-level leagues there are 4 officials. There are two linesmen and two referees.

in a legitimate hockey game, there are 5 offensive/defensive players per. side, and then a goalie at each end. So, there are 12 players on the ice at one time.
