∙ 12y agoOver 900 people died in the Jonestown mass murder-suicide in 1978. The event was orchestrated by cult leader Jim Jones, who urged his followers to drink cyanide-laced punch. It remains one of the largest single losses of American civilian life in a non-natural disaster.

The only comparison is that people were killed. The Salem trials were legal trials caused by a religious panic and was contained to a single county. Only twenty people died and those deaths were technically legalized. Jonestown was sheer massacre because of cultish mentality.

About 900 were killed. Infants and younger children were poisoned by their parents. Many parents poisoned themselves. Some did get shot for resisting.
