It was started by Amy Tobey who selected songs at Fenway Park during games from 1998-2004. She used the song a few times and got great fan response, so much so that she got very superstitious about it (as do many Red Sox fans). She would play the song somewhere between the seventh and ninth innings if the team was ahead, depending on whether she felt the team was going to win.
In 2002, when new management took over at the park, they requested that Tobey play the song during the eighth inning of every game. 'They liked it and they just loved the crowd reaction with it and stuff," she says. Though Tobey says she was nervous the change would be bad luck for the team, its appeal to fans ultimately ruled.
And under the song's spell, the Red Sox won their first World Series in 2004 after 86 years. It was even included in the recent film ''Fever Pitch," starring jimmy fallon and Drew Barrymore, that uses scenes from 2004's winning season.

On April 14, 1910, President William Howard Taft began the tradition of the President throwing the first pitch at the baseball season opener. Legend has it that President Taft was also responsible for baseball's seventh inning stretch. While attending a baseball game, President Taft rose to stretch between halves of the seventh inning. The crowd (ever polite, as baseball fans are) rose in unison out of respect for the President. The tradition continues to this day.
