Not certain, but his smoking in WCW was initially a gimmick through which an actual habit was brought into the ring. Similar to Scott Hall's Alcoholism problem being used on screen around the same time. It was seen as failing to further his character, gained little crowd support, and as an unnecessary action which could provoke impressionable viewers to adopt the bad habit, and thus - again in a similar manner to Hall's alcoholism - was removed from WCW and relegated back to the Giant's personal life.

Whether he has since managed to quit smoking or not, I have no idea. hopefully that is the case, for smoking is a detriment to the full fitness of a professional wrestler.
