Rod Matthews became the first Juvenile to be tried as an adult in Massachusetts. The parents along with other citizens (zero tolerance level for such a brutal murder) on July 27, 1996 had Governor William Weld sign into law the new Juvenile Bill that automatically transfers 14, 15, and 16 year old murderers into the adult system. Massachusetts now has the toughest Juvenile laws in the country. The date for the parole hearing for Rod Matthews was set Dec. 6, 2001 at parole board's central office in South Boston, MA Letters of protest were sent and on December 27th the parents of Shaun received word of a unanimous vote AGAINST Rod Matthews release and he will have to wait another 5 years before applying for parole again. Over 362,000 letters and signatures were sent in to the State Parole Board for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. NOTE FROM MARCY: It's sad that such a devious murder would not carry a life sentence and that the parents have to go through this every 5 years and hundreds of other parents are dealing with the same thing.
