What country are you talking about?

And do you mean a first year apprentice, or a first year fully qualified mechanic?

it all depends. when starting off you'll probably make anything from $9.00 to $10.00 an hr. once you've been on the field for a while and you've become a master mechanic(5yrs) you could make $60,000 +yr. again it depends where you are and who you work for.

An Interprovincial Journeyperson Automobile Technician can expect to earn an inconsistent gross income of over $20. an hour in many areas of Canada if working under the "flat rate" system of pay. Salaried employees will earn less. Keep in mind there is an ongoing out-of-pocket tool and equipment expense to maintain which can, and in many cases will reach a six digit figure over a technicians career.

a mechanic's (usually called, technician, these days) pay varies depending on where he/she works. usually, (not always, but usually) the best pay can be made at a dealership. sometimes, everyone pools the hours they bill, & the pay can be pretty good, if everyone is productive. this isn't always fair to each individual on the team, but money-wise, it may be pretty good. other times, a person may be paid flat rate, per job. this can suck major bilge. still other times, a body might be paid on a commission basis. this can also suck, in my opinion. the best money i ever made was when i worked for a dealership. there wasn't alot of support between techs, & the hours sucked. also, i didn't always agree with the billing practices. that is, i often finished a given job in less time than the mitchell book quoted...still, the customer was billed for more labor than i actually spent on the job. so, the pay will depend on where & for whom u work. be picky about where u look for employment, & if ur new, don't carry any attitude with u when u start. keep an open mind & cultivate positive relationships with ur fellow techs who have been there longer. this will help u immensely while ur there. good luck.

Auto mechanics perform basic maintenance on cars as well as finding and repairing more complex issues. Increasingly, mechanics take formal training courses and become certified. The average weekly income for a mechanic is around $750.
