The name 49ers harkens back to the gold rush in the mid 1800's when people were migrating west in search of gold. The Gold Rush, as it was called, began in 1849 so often the people heading out that way were called 49ers. The team took it's name from those people, and it is often thought that their gold helmets are a reflection of the Gold Rush itself.
In 1849 there was a big gold strike in California. A bunch of people in California went to go looking for gold. These people were called 'The 49ers'. So, the San Francisco football team named themselves after these people.
1849 and San Francisco go together because of the famous California Gold Rush. In 1848, a man named John Sutter found gold on his land. The people he'd hired to work on his ranch let the information slip, and his land was stolen by miners. In 1849 alone, more than 80,000 people went to California to mine for gold. San Fransisco prospered greatly because of the rush.
